I canned 8 quarts of dill pickles today. The bottoms broke out of 2 of them. Learn from this photo: the pickles are not supposed to be poking through the glass.

Wow how did that happen. Too much pressure or what?

It was one of two things Danny, either flaws in the glass or a really pissed-off goddess.

I was fortunate. I canned pickles for the first time, this year.
I did 12 qts.. and they all 'took'.
Now, today I have 25 lbs of tomatoes.. and my caning pot is packed.
I need to bring tomatoes to town, for a give away!!
ps.. I packed my pot on purpose.

Here's a trained culinary school response --
Breakage resulted from expansion & contraction of the jar is my guess. For instance if one is making jello, the boiling water goes over the jello, followed by cold water or ice cubes. Occasionally the glass bowl will break from the sudden temperature change. The more lead in the glass, the more likely it is to break, which is why certain wine glasses & dishes are not recommended or labeled "not dishwasher safe".

Or microwave safe.
