I use slats from plastic blinds to label my plants. In the past I marked them with a sharpie. I learned from a gardening site that a plain old pencil works better, so I switched to that method. As I put my garden to bed I've been removing the labels. The pencil markings are as sharp and legible as the day I wrote them.
