Funny, my mom was from Missouri, and she always pronounced the word wash as "warsh". Fortunately, I grew up in California. Oh well, Mom is gone now, and I speak English as I know it. However, I have a book that shows the pronunciations of words, some of which come from early England, and during the time of Shakespeare, the language was not at all as we now speak the language. In that era, they did in fact speak much like the warsh. I have a neighbor who knows all about Shakespeare, and we have fun discussing the English language and it is an amalgam of various languages from various countries. The King's English was in fact quite different in that day than it is at present. QEII speaks quite elegantly, but her predecessors were a different bunch.
