View Full Version : Help with aids quilt
:(My brother just died today and I was wondering if anyone out there could help me make a aids quilt. I don't have any money to make one or even pay someone and would like to know if anyone with a heart could help me make one for my brother who has aids. He is one of the few who has had aids since 1986 and beat alot of odds with this terrible disease. I just met my brother for the first time a year ago and he was adopted out to a wonderful family that raised him. I am so fortunate that I got to meet him and got to know him. He was and still is a wonderful, friend, brother and son to two wonderful families. So anyone please help me.
thank you so much

Jaycee, an aids quilt need not be quilted or even sewn at all. I've forgotten the standard dimensions, about 4 x 4, I think. You can use any kind of fabric you like and a glue gun to attach borders, photos, momentoes, souvenirs.
I don't know if the national aids quilt is still being added on to or not. But you can Google it and find out pretty quickly.
Meanwhile, I'm sorry to hear about your brother. My sympathies to you and your family.

Call Sew in Heaven (Holiday Island) & inquire about the monthly quilting club hereabouts. I'm sure you might find help & solace from that group. Also as Michael suggests, you can make a throw from fleece with or without fringed edges or ties & attach mementos by velcro so they can be removed before laundering. Your family & you are in my prayers, Jaycee. I am sorry for your loss.
thank you so much for your thoughts...I have a idea of what i would like to see in his quilt. I will def. check into that.,.

Jaycee, The quilt is still being added on to. It is 3x6 I believe. It does not need to be sewn or quilted. You can use markers, paint on the panel, use appliques, pictures, etc. My brothers panel is in #5785. You can view the quilt online at www.aidsquilt.org. My brother passed away in 2007. He was in a coma before he found out he had aids, and died not knowing. The doctors estimated he had been living with it for 7-10 years, and had not known. He had never been sick. The form for the quilt is also on the website, you need to print it out when u mail it, and you can also add a story for the archive. After they get your info they will send you a quarterly newsletter, which has stories, and tells about the progress with the quilt. All panels are housed in Atlanta, but some panels travel to different places for displays. If you need any info pm me, and I maybe can answer any questions you have. When I sent mine in it took about 3 months before it was actully added in. Sorry about your brother. Mine was only 36 when he passed away.

Eurekamom, thanks for filling in the blanks. Very helpful.
Thank you so much for sharing...I'm currently waiting on some pictures of him. My mother had to give him up for adoption and I just found him Last april. It was a blessing to get to know my brother and to find out he had been living with aids since 1986. He had a strong will to live, but at the same time in the last few years he wanted to go until he met me and then he was living again. I will surely miss my brother...I just wished I had more time.
