We ran into somebody at Chalupa Night who isn't a member of the promo@eurekasprings.org mailing list, and asked to see the following email about the latest major virus to hit ES since that Snow White wench:
------------------
The following is only relevant to PC users, not Mac users:
If you get blank emails, as reported by Jann below, somebody in your contact list has a virus.
The virus "carrier" is NOT the person who appeared to send the email to you (Sandy Wright, EM Towers, Jack Moyer in the examples below). This virus is called Klez. It jumbles up senders to confuse you and to make the virus harder to detect and remove.
If you have the virus, people with whom you've exchanged email will get random files sent to them from your machine. This means that you can have confidential info sent out, so it's a good idea to get rid of this bug as soon as it's detected.
Klez also EATS your virus protection software, so you have to use a special tool to get rid of it.
-------------------------------------------
WHO IS REALLY SENDING THE VIRUS?
To find out who is REALLY sending you the virus, you have to do this (in Outlook):
In the list of messages in your Inbox, right click on the name of the suspicious email. (You'll see the column headers From, Subject, Received with each message on a line below. Right click on the sender's name)
You'll get a popup menu. At the bottom of this menu, there is a choice called "options." Click on "options"
A new screen will pop up. Look for the title "Internet Headers" in the box. The FIRST line, with the title "Return-Path" is the email address of the person who actually has the virus. For example,
Return-Path: <kim@positiveidea.com>
The email you see in this Return-Path is the actual, infected sender.
--------------------------------------------
I HAVE THE KLEZ VIRUS. NOW WHAT?
To remove Klez, you need to use a special tool. Click on the link below to download it. Print the instructions and follow them step-by-step:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.h@mm.html
If you have the Klez virus, this tool will detect and remove it. Then you'll have to re-install your virus protection software and get the most recent updates.
-------------------------------------------
********* IMPORTANT!!! NOTE: If you have trouble using the removal tool, you'll need to take your computer to whomever fixes it for you. This isn't something that can be "walked through" over the phone.
Be sure to keep your virus protection software updated to avoid getting this and other viruses.

Subject: blank emails
I've been receiving blank emails--no message or attachment. One was from Sandy Wright and one from EM Towers today. Jack Moyer's came through.
Would you please re-send the messages?
Thanks,
Jann
