View Full Version : How ironic

Kim,
I was told by a former City Council Woman who spoke out against what she felt was excessive motorcylce noise that on these pages someone, an Oklahoma biker I believe, suggested she needed a good gang raping to straighten her out. She was and is to this day outraged that her complaint to you was ignored and the poster was not removed from the board. On the other hand Royal Alcott a sometimes contentious, but very bright man who knows more about this town than anyone on this board, is barred. Was the biker "ironic" and Royal not? That you would trivialise my complaint and be an apologist for rubbish like that is unconscionable. I suppopse if say I am being ironic, and I drop in on Marty's or your post's and talk about being near your doors in a deep dark holler... oh wait you've threatened to kick me off for being too persistent with Marty. Instead of shutting down all the threads that are critical of the condo project or you, why don't you and Jane get together and restore the "lost threads". Now I am not a conspiracy buff, but how is it that a web site director in the info business doesn't back up stuff for over a month?

Jagregg, this IS indeed Kim and Jan's board. If you don't like the way they run it, you can choose to post on another board. There are plenty of choices in and around Eureka Springs. Based on my personal experience, they try to loosely keep the board civil. They give all of us a LOT of latitude before they clamp down.

I also have railed against excessive motorcycle noise from modified pipes on this board. Some motorcylists who evidently have modified pipes have railed back. That is the nature of free and fair discourse.

On the rare occasions that Kim and Jan have deemed it necessary to shut a poster down, I have understood the reasons and have agreed with the decision. And, if ever I didn't agree with the decision, I would give them the benefit of the doubt, because I may not know all the facts.....and because it is THEIR BOARD.

To my understanding, and I count Kim and Jan among my friends in Eureka, the lost month of threads is irretrieveably lost due to the old Geekfest software not being able to handle the massive volume of internet users who post and lurk here. To my understanding, the lost month is WHY we have this new board (running on newer and better software) now. I don't think they can restore that month if someone held a gun to their heads. BUT.....they have fixed the problem, should it happen in the future, by transferring Geekfest to better software.

So........does that take care of your problems?

In short, IMHO, they can run it any way they see fit.

I don't know the story of Royal Alcott. I do know the story of jagregg. He quoted exactly what Max said, he did not make a word up, he did not take those words out of context, and what Max said should not have been tolerated.

Max posted threats, pure and simple. Was he wandering in an inebriate of humor?

Who knows. Try a threat like this against a public official, and you'll see that humor is not a defense.

Try a threat like this at an airport and you'll find signs that say even a joke is actionable.

It doesn't matter what politics you espouse on a given thread. Threats should not be tolerated.

Neither should racist or sexist slurs have a place on this bb.

And if we are not allowed to say this, OtR, because Kim and Jan can run this bb any way they see fit, I'd ask where you are as a lawyer on the points made here. Granted, K & J have a right to run this board as they see fit. Do I have a right to complain as above?

Jamie. If a former city council woman had complained to me, I would remember it. If someone was threatened with gang rape on these pages, the post would be in the Chief Earl's archive and one of the detectives would have already subpoenaed their ISP ... if I had seen it. If I failed to see it, there are at least 50 people who would have sent me a moderator's alert.

We tolerate a lot of bs on this forum, including the bs you produce, but criminal threats are another matter. If anyone, including a public official, is threatened by anybody, the ESPD gets involved.

The fact that no alderwoman complained to me (and there isn't a one who doesn't know how to reach me), no moderator alerts were sent, and that there was no ESPD involvement leads me to believe that you're just being a self-absorbed, pot-stirring troll. Again.

Royal Alcott is not banned from this forum. I correspond with Royal from time to time. He asked me to send his password several times on the old version of Geekfest. He asked again for his password when we moved to this new software. I've fulfilled every one of these requests. If Royal wants to post, he has the means to do so. If he chooses not to join the discussion, it is his decision.

I didn't threaten to kick you off for being to persistent with Marty. I threatened to kick you off for being a jackass.

As I recall, you were the one who quoted Jimmy Cliff to me. Something about "I'd rather be a free man in my grave then living as a puppet or a slave?" Was that you? I don't remember because the last backup we had of Geekfest dated back to the time when we moved Geekfest to a new server so that you could blather more frequently at a faster rate...free of charge...courtesy of us...on our backs, our time and our money. Oh, I'm sorry. Your personal soapbox time was interrupted by unprecedented technical difficulties? Cry me a river.

If you were, indeed, the Jimmy Cliff impersonator, then you were also the one who told me you weren't going to be threatened into self-censorship. Let me make this perfectly clear: I don't need to threaten you into self-censorship. You will either get a grip on your mouth and your attitude or you can take your "free speech" to a public park and buy a permit because you won't be trolling on Geekfest.

I have no obligation, moral or constitutional, to provide you a place to vent your spleen. So either be reasonable, be moderately polite (within the very broad meaning of the Geekfest definition of "polite,") stop running around trying to get people in trouble to deflect attention from your own rude behavior ... or be gone.

You pick.

Or I'll choose for you.

Barbara,

Respectful? My God woman..truth be known, it's YOU and Jamie we get the most complaints and comments about..on and off the board. As in email and phone calls, and in person...the question.."who the HELL is Barbara Lightner and Jamie Gregg?" You two are making quite an impression around town and it's not a good one from the comments I am hearing. But that doesn't concern me...this board does.

But then I guess your tagline of "lavendar menace" and your picture of a woman shooting arrows is fairly representative.

Both of YOU need to either lighten up or find somewhere else to spew.

I, for one am rather tired of providing a venue for you to use to lead and link to your blogs, sites...all free of course and then be subject to your menacing..no matter what color it may be.

Get a grip..both of you.

Kim

Barbara. I see tomorrow is your birthday. Or, technically, your birthday starts about one hour from now. So, first, happy almost-birthday.

Next, please bear in mind that Geekfest is, like all other public forums, something like a country with its own set of frequently incomprehensible laws.

If you read over the posts in Open Forum and the Archive, you'll see an unmistakable trend.

Every time things get too serious, Geekfest rises up to be ridiculous. It's nothing personal. It's like ... a reflex. A safety valve. Usually, when we've been having a very intense debate, you'll see a simultaneous increase in the number joke & recipe posts. Sometimes, as in the case under such vigorous discussion, people will launch off on humorous asides that other people find less than amusing.

I repeat: It's nothing personal. It happens to everybody... including me. I tend to get more wound up over national politics than nearly anything else. Usually, right when I'm at my peak level of outrage, somebody will hijack the thread. What can I tell you? This is tradition. It is our way. It is just as much a part of the Geekfest culture as it is for people in other countries to don colorful, heavily embroidered costumes, sacrifice chickens (sorry Rex!) and dance in town squares.

And ... I know. You want to whack me for making rude, other-country'est comments right now. Don't you? Just breathe ... let it go.

If you don't want me to single jgregg out ... OK, fair enough Barbara. Jan is right. There are only two people who inspire regular, frequent requests to "shut them the hell up! God. Why don't you kick them?" Jamie is one. You are the other.

But if you've managed to be successfully insulated for 68 years against the irony of you telling other people they're rude ... well... I may get back to you on this by Tuesday but, for today, may you have 68 more years of blissful denial.

jagregg

OTR,
I agree. This is Kim and Jan's board and it is good that you recognize that. It is not a community bulletin board where lively debate is encouraged and fairness is demanded. Like any other privately held medium it's editorial opinions are aggressively advanced. This back and forth is a fine example. They are defending threatening language under the guise of irony ( and racial slurs). These statements weren't say it once and say just kidding which is still unacceptable, they were repeated in different forms four times, which is a pattern. Yes, defending the threatener, and threatening the ones who object.

I will ask the former coucilman if she would like to write an open letter to Geekfest... if she is permitted.

Lively even aggressive give and take I welcome but the kind of rubbish that suggests someone lurking near my door and the loved ones within it will not be tolerated. For someone who claims to have family first Jan you have a strange idea of what's in play.

Speaking of lurkers, the lurkers you referred to OTR are really locals who are way to smart to post here and view it as entertainment or at best a place to hear the issue du jour that they may find the truth in the real world.

I would encourage all of you, posters and lurkers alike to read the closed threads. They are in the banned book section. You will know them by the padlocks on them.

But then I guess your tagline of "lavendar menace" and your picture of a woman shooting arrows is fairly representative.

The woman shooting arrows is Artemis. Are you familiar with her?

Lavender menace begins with Lesbians in the 60's choosing lavender as a color representing their commitment to an awareness of social injustices, and a willingness to work toward their end.

At the same time, the National Organization for Women (NOW) was starting up. Those of us who were also feminist joined up.

Betty Friedan called us the lavender menace because she didn't want us in NOW, and she thought we were disturbing the peace in NOW.

I am well-pleased that you find these items representative.

Ah, yes. I am. Artemis. The little She-Bear.

All this time, I had been thinking your avatar was Pallas/Athene, goddess of civilization and practical knowledge. But Artemis makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

Barbara Lightner
01-29-2007, 01:00 AM
She-Bear, in one of her animal incarnations certainly: "ruler of the stars and protectoress of the axis mundi, Pole of the World," according to Walker's encyclopedia.

But another more general, earth-bound, manifestation is the one probably depicted in my avatar: "Artemis uses the silver bow."

"She is a friend to mortals, and dances through the countryside in her silver sandals giving her divine protection to the wild beasts, particularly the very young. She rides her silver chariot across the sky and shoots her arrows of silver Moonlight to the earth below."

I liked the Artemis avatar because it was about woods and their beauty when undisturbed. 'Nuf said.

Ingredients
9 oz pkg frozen spinach, thawed, squeezed to drain, chopped
8 oz pkg light cream cheese, softened, not tub variety
1/2 cup shredded carrots
1/2 cup sour cream
1/8 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp dried dill weed
2 oz jar sliced pimiento, drain
Method
In 1 qt microwave-safe casserole, combine all ingredients; mix well. Cover with microwave-safe waxed paper or plastic wrap. Microwave on high for 3 to 5 minutes or until hot, stirring twice during cooking. Serve immediately with crackers and/or fresh vegetable dippers while surfing on Geekfest

That may be the most hysterically funny thing you've ever said.

The thing about calling a stranger a nickname because your friends don't have a problem with it is that the stranger isn't your friend and may not like it. Truth be known, your friends may not either.

Karen has no desire to be the object of the kind of lynch mob mentality that she was subjected to on this board in June of 2003 (See the "Community Meeting at the Copa" thread around 6/18/03 and others preceding it). I don't blame her.

The mob action, born here actually led to a "community meeting" at a local bar to decide "what to do" about Alderman Linblad who at that time was accused tried and convicted by the geekfest mob under K&J's watchful eyes of being personally responsible for ruining the police car collecters parade by requesting they not use their sirens on the canyon that is Upper Spring St.. In so doing she was in the eyes of the mob, solely responsible for the failing businesses in town (sound familiar?). This meeting literally had to be visited by the Chief of Police in his official capacity to basically let them know they were full of it.

I do in fact find it interesting, that your cute friend Boydstun, finds what happened to Karen funny and got not a smidge of disapproval from the powers that be. Here are a few of the posts that apparently did not rise to the level of what you consider rude as you do the ones by Royal Alcott, Barb Lightener and myself:

Carriageguy posted 6-18-2003 09:47 PM (about the community meeting)

"Well, we could only come up with ONE bucket of tar, (it was just old stale maple syrup) and SOMEONE forgot to bring the FEATHERS. Lita was out of torch fuel, and besides tose torches always catch on fire and her extinguisher is runnin low. Someone brought a new rope, but you know how folks are about new ropes so we scratched THAT idea.

DrLewall posted 6-12-2003 11:57 PM

"Hmmm..sad isn't it.. I'll supply the feathers, anyone got any tar? Or perhaps I could get some of my "biker" buddies and we'll invite her to go "dancing" in the woods.. no need to waste money on an attourney, let spend it ont he party complete with loud music afterwards. KL, youre and IDIOT!DrLewall"

It is important to note the quote is exact, including spelling and quotes around dancing. Kim, you are right, Karen did not contact you, and why would she given your lack of response. My question is why did you not contact her? She dealt with it in her own way, alone, and took necessary precautions. As for your 50 moderators and and how serious you take things, bull crap. Both of these men continued to post on this board for a long time without so much as a caution or rebuke. You tossed carriageguy, but not until he pissed you off. That you tolerate the type of trash like this does not mean you give a wide latitude to speech. You run the board like the Fox Network, diversionary trash (most of theirs and yours I enjoy), and an iron-fisted one track news dept tha is totally intolerant of opposing views.

You are also "right" about Royal he is not banned... apparently just banished:

"You on the other hand don't even seem to have the good sense of embarrasment God gave a flea.

If only a few were the selected targets of your venom, it would be one thing, but no one is worthy, and everybody is your underling.

You have made your last post on this board. I would suggest that you either start your own board and pay for it yourself, or you join one of the other boards that may be more tolerant of your behavior. The Internet is full of places to spew and vent and some would probably even applaud your style.

For any of you who want to scream free speech and all that other stuff we've heard over the years, save it. If you want a board you can control, then start one. And by all means invite Royal."

A quote from Royal during the geekfest mob episode:

Royal Alcott posted 6-15-03 01:35 AM

"Horseman,

Quit this poor mouthing bull about losing business and concentrate on why so little business comes here in the first place."

Interesting, Royal was gone in three months and the other two remained to "play" on gfest. It really isn't about rudeness as you say, it is about control. Royal was far from the rudest person on the board, he just wouldn't curtsy to the queens and worse yet was capable of verbally pointing out when they had no clothes. You were wrong then, and you are wrong now.

Indeed it was me that told you I would rather be a dead man in my grave than to live my life as a puppet or a slave. I meant it then and I mean it now. I'm too old to change that. Taking a stand has never been something I "used to do". If that "free speech stuff" is more offensive to you than a biker gang "dancing" in the woods with one woman and celebrating afterwards then by all means get out your "Paul Bunyan boots and make me taste shoe polish" ( get your little pirate hat on G, you wouldn't want to miss that). Oh and if I was Jimmy Cliff, Kim, you probably would have removed Boystun for his KKK and "coloreds and rappers" irony. After all Jimmy, God Bless him would have been worthy of your deference.

As for those who "complain" about Barb Lightener and myself, I can only imagine who they are. On the other hand, before you padlocked it, the Cupes thread had over 5700 viewings. It is on page three, and being buried as we speak for anyone that would like to see.
