How basic or advanced do I need to go for a multimeter around the house for checking switches, light fixtures, outlets. and that sort of stuff. I noticed that there is a wide range of prices? Thank you in advance for your response.

Farmer, you can use even a simple multimeter around the house. Just do not try to read Amps on a basic meter. To read house current (Amps) you need a better meter. I use mine on cars and the house, even Christmas lights.
