    Reprehensible.
Is this like an annulment in which the registry will no longer exist.....as if it never happened?

    Dear Mr. King,

Congratulations on your new job as House Minority Leader. You seem to be full of vim and vigor to create new legislation. So much so that I hear you are planning to introduce a bill to overturn the Eureka Springs Domestic Partnership Registry Ordinance (DPR.)

Since the DPR is simply a polite and welcoming gesture to Eureka Springs citizens and visitors--not a law with any consequence or effect--it's odd to think of the House Majority Leader waging legislative war against the Eureka Springs DPR. I would say, "Doesn't the Arkansas Legislature have more important things to worry about?" but, no, apparently not.

With the current budget surplus, I suppose you need to find something to while away the idle hours in Little Rock. Idle hands are indeed the Devil's Workshop, so it's good to know that you're keeping busy with important tasks like micromanaging smokers and the tourism promotion habits of the little village in your district that always fails to vote for you.

Speaking of which... now that you're also on the Parks and Tourism subcommittee, should we expect all Arkansas tourism promotion to be tailored to your personal taste? You don't like the lottery. Is it just the lottery, or is sinnin' and gamblin' and dancin' and drinkin' in general? In which case, perhaps Hot Springs should prepare itself for the sort of supervision you feel qualified to exercise over Eureka Springs. I hear Little Rock has a few dens of iniquity too. If you can spare a moment out of your busy callously use Eureka to raise re-election funds schedule, perhaps you and your hatchet would like to pay a visit to some of the wretched pits of sin that are conveniently located near the state capitol.

I do realize that writing to you is an exercise in silliness, Mr. King.

I imagine your aides pitching email into a special dustbin marked "72632" because, you know and we all know, there aren't many people in this district zip code who vote for you. So, really, why should you worry? I can't say I disagree with your political strategy on that one. If you need to get votes from the people you regard as your constituents, all you have to do is drag Eureka Springs out of the closet and flog our little burg in public. Publicly beating gay and lesbian citizens of and visitors to Eureka Springs is really just a bonus. When you don't have the legislative record to get re-elected on your own merits, I understand that you need to drag unwilling scapegoats into the public square for a beating that (you think) makes you look powerful and competent.

The nice thing about that strategy is... eventually, it's unsustainable.

The people in your district that you worry about have the same worries and the same needs for attention from Little Rock, whether you are grandstanding over Eureka Springs. Or not. You can publicly flog Eureka Springs in general, and gays and lesbians in particular, until your cows and chickens come home. Sooner or later, the District 91 citizens you care about now will notice that's all you're doing. It's inevitable. I doubt that your most rabid fans will continue to give you a pass when the chicken litter rises past their knees... their necks... and gets into their nostrils.

I look forward to the day when sense reigns once again in District 91. People actually live and work here and there is nothing about your fundraising "beat Eureka" strategy that will help any of us, anywhere in the district, to do that.

If there is anything I regret about your latest quixotic mission, Mr. King, it is this: I wish you were better and more widely known than you are. The vision of a state legislator lunging with puppylike enthusiasm to right the moral wrongs(!) of a local, legal-effect-free ordinance in a small village is really the stuff of great late-night comedy.

Oh, what Saturday Night Live could do with you... if only you had enough clout to be noticed.

Please, Mr. King, will you work yourself up the political backside as quickly as possible and get out of the way so that your district has a shot at real representation? And will you give Jerry Cox a kiss from me?

    Most sincerely,

    Kim Ridenour

Mebbe we need to now start up a campaign chest for the yellow dawg that will oppose the court of King in the next election.

When will term limits cut short his reign?

    Default What a jerk!

    Dear Mr. King,
I have been married for over 20 years to my husband and we have a strong marriage. We also have many friends from all walks of life who live in Eureka Springs. Arkansas. Please don't legislate your religious beliefs on our beautiful city. Our town, which you don't even live in, welcomes everyone! We are also struggling with the recent recession resulting from George Bush's lack of leadership for our beloved America. We are proud of our mayor, Dani Joy. The courage she showed when she stood up for equal rights and the Domestic Partnership Registry was inspiring to us all and has brought much needed income into our town. We recently heard that you are getting ready to introduce legislation that will further hurt our city finances. This hate filled legislation that you want to impose on our town will also deeply hurt many wonderful friends that we personally know.

In case you haven't noticed, America is in crisis. With all the serious problems America has right now, this is the legislation that you spend our tax payer dollars focusing on? We have a hard time understanding why. Maybe you want some press time or attention and are willing to hurt our town and friends to get it? Why aren't you spending your time creating legislation that creates jobs, helps our country face the global climate change, improves our crumbling schools and infrastructure or brings more tourist dollars to the state of Arkansas? Aren't those priorites for you? You are demonstrating to us that they are not. Instead, you are spending our tax dollars composing legislation that painfully seeks to take our city one step backward. How disgraceful!

In the future, I won't be marking your name on my voting ballot. In fact, my husband and I will make a concerted effort to financially help with the campaign of your opponent.

    Another good one artty.

"In the future, I won't be marking your name on my voting ballot. In fact, my husband and I will make a concerted effort to financially help with the campaign of your opponent."

So, I now pledge $100, for starters, to any yellow dawg Democrat or Independent who opposes the court of the crimson King.

If one person does it, they'll just think he's crazy.
If two people do it, they'll just think they are both faggots.
If three people do it, they'll think it's a Movement.
    That's what it is folks,
An anti-King Massacree Movement at the polls.

    Dani, you up for this?

    Default Domestic Partnership Registry

    Representative King:

Recent reports indicate that you are proposing legislation that will, if enacted, prohibit Domestic Partnership Registries in Arkansas. I am opposed to such a bill, and, as a constituent, am entitled to know your motivation for this undertaking. Please respond to my e-mail or to the address below.

You should understand that my family is politically active, and offers broad support both for and against those candidates whose positions reflect or oppose our beliefs.

    Default Talk about Ironic

Even after 2 1/2 years after it went into effect, the DPR continues to generate positive media attention for Eureka Springs.

This just in from the Tucson, AZ Observer; ironically appearing on the same day State Rep. Bryan King will introduce legislation to ban DPRs in the state of Arkansas:

"One New Year’s Day, a group of friends in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, got the idea that their town, a popular wedding destination, needed a domestic partner registry. A few months later, with the help of some online research and perseverance, Eureka Springs became the first city in Arkansas to pass an ordinance allowing lesbian and gay couples to register as domestic partners.

Their effort wasn’t part of a coordinated national campaign. It wasn’t backed by a generous funder. It wasn’t run by lawyers, politicians or trained organizers. It was simply the work of a small group of inspired local activists who wanted to make their hometown a better place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people . . .
    "

Imagine the Observer's surprise later today when it (and the NYT, etc.) learns of King Bigot's efforts.
" . . . the danger of erosion of rights stems largely from the fact that so many citizens of the majority, who have never been deprived of any of these rights, find it difficult to understand what the deprivation of them means in the lives of others." Earl Warren

I am glad that the legislature has fixed all the other problems in the state and now has time to move on the growing "homosexual plague" that threatens our American way of life. With the tobacco tax and the state lottery legislation taken care of there's little left to do but try and alienate some more people. (see voters)
